The 2008 NBA Dunk Contest will go down as one the most creative of all-time. Gerald Green’s Birthday Wish dunk was the most; well-thought out, imaginative dunk I’ve seen since double stuff Oreos and milk. Hokey? Sure was, but isn’t that what has happened to today’s dunk contests? The rules state that for one dunk you must use a teammate during a dunk. That breeds of the hokiness now found in most recent dunk contests.

There was some “creative” dunks this past Saturday; Dwight Howard takes the cupcake for his imagination. Although I must question, how do you win a dunk contest without dunking? Howard’s Superman dunk attempt wasn’t a dunk at all and should have been re-done. A throw done is not a dunk in my book. I’ll give points for creativity for wearing a cape but still not a dunk. He received a 50 from the judges...and I ask how? It wasn’t a dunk! I must also say, when I saw the cheerleader holding the lil nerf hoop I was thinking that he’d put the hoop on the backboard, as he did, but instead of taking the ball from it, I was hoping to see the net at 14 feet (which Howard had wanted the NBA to do for the contest) and dunk a nerf ball after dunking the regulation ball. Maybe next year?

Sure the most recent dunk contests fail to even reach the likes of the masterful Dr. J and Michael Jordan or the fluidness of Dominique Wilkins or even dare I say Brett Barry’s foul line dunk. Ok, I only added him since he was on the Clippers at the time and did that dunk in his warm-ups. Nothing will compare to the dunk rivalry of Jordan vs. Wilkins. Although I only wonder if those contests where held in today’s age, how many times would the media let Jordan get away with the foul line dunk? Mainly because of the “big” names, the stars of today’s NBA fail to put their dunking skills on exhibit. Than again, how different ways can you dunk? I think that question was answered in this years contest.
